I've Found Some Abandoned Kittens. How Can I Help Them?

Back to listings

Firstly – mother cats rarely abandon their kittens.  Sometimes a mother cat will be killed while she is raising her kittens, but this is rare.  Mother cats spend time out of the nest and even if you don’t see them, they are lurking close.  We promise you!

Rescuing newborn kittens is a complex, resource intensive issue.  There are not enough people in Coachella Valley who have stepped up to the plate to help raise all the kittens who are found and taken from their mothers’ nests.  Kittens requiring bottle feeding must be euthanized at the shelter if there is not an available bottle feeder.

If the kittens can’t walk on their own, put them back in the nest and watch for the mother cat to return.  If she is not back in a couple of hours, you will need to help the kittens to survive.  Usually the mother cat returns.

If the kitten is not walking on his/her own, never feed a cold kitten!  A kitten must be warmed first.  After warmed, start by putting Karo syrup on the gums.  Never feed cow’s milk.  Kitten formula or goats milk in a pinch will work.

If you would like to help raise kittens that you have found, we will support you to do this and then adopt them out.  Your help for a few weeks will save lives!
